World Piece at the Martin Lerman Gallery
If you haven’t noticed the new gallery located within The Country Printer, you will now. Long Island’s own Mark Kuhn, sculptor and artist, is installing one of his large and beautiful pieces at the 716 New York Avenue for everyone to see and appreciate. “World Effort” is sculpted from one poplar tree, weighs approximately 2 tons, is 108” tall and 50” in circumference. The process of moving it to the gallery was an issue, Looks Great Services president, Kristian Agoglia welcomed the challenge (with his cranes).
Gary Lerman, curator of the gallery named after his Dad, embraced the idea of having one of Mark’s larger pieces on public display. The gallery currently has six smaller pieces that are easily moved. “I have always admired Mark Kuhn’s approach to his wood sculptures, his ability to create from one piece of wood like many sculptors work from one block of stone. He doesn’t piece the wood together to make his final form. He creates his form from the confines of the wood, or in this case, the tree.”
Mark created “World Effort” over ten years ago, and it is just as meaningful now (maybe more). It shows us that the world does not survive alone. It is the group effort that enables us to survive. Sharing his art in this public fashion is an obvious statement of his perpetual commitment to beautify society through a creative mind and exceptionally talented hands. |
